Find Medicare Part D Plans by State

Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) is available in every state. You can learn more about Part D in your state – just use our interactive map, or click on one of the links below.

Some Medicare beneficiaries don’t realize that Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, doesn’t cover prescription drugs except in limited situations. For most prescription drugs you take at home, you’ll need Medicare prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D (unless you have separate coverage for your medications).

Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage is optional. It’s available through private insurance companies that contract with Medicare.

There are a couple of different ways you can get Medicare prescription drug coverage.

  • A stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. This can work alongside your Original Medicare coverage. You need to be enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or Part B, and you have to live within the plan’s service area.
  • A Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan. Medicare Advantage plans deliver your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private health insurance company. Many plans include extra benefits as well, such as routine vision care. Most Medicare Advantage plans cover prescription drugs. You need to be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, and you have to live within the plan’s service area and continue to pay your Part B premium each month.

One important thing to know: Every Medicare Prescription Drug Plan has its own formulary. That’s a list of medications the plan covers; it includes other information too, such as your cost-sharing portion for each medication. When you’re looking for a plan, make sure the plan covers your medications. The formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan if this happens.
