Muscle Relaxants

This article describes muscle relaxants and the health conditions that this drug type is used for.Muscle relaxants are a group of medications used to treat a wide variety of health conditions, such as neck pain or lower back pain from muscle spasms. Some doctors prescribe these medications to treat migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.

There are two main types of muscle relaxants.

  • Skeletal muscle relaxants reduce muscle tension and relieve skeletal muscle spasms. They’re generally prescribed for short-term periods to treat specific health conditions. These drugs act on the central nervous system.
  • Neuromuscular muscle relaxants are usually used to relax voluntary muscles during surgery. These drugs don’t act on the central nervous system.

If your physician prescribes muscle relaxant drugs for you, make sure you discuss with your doctor how they can help your health conditions, how you should take them, and any possible side effects.
