Here are a few facts from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) about Medicare enrollment in Louisiana in 2018:
Private insurance companies must have contracts with Medicare to offer Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. Depending on the terms of the contract between the plan and Medicare, not every plan is available statewide or in all service areas. Each year, the plan must renew its contract with Medicare, so the availability of a plan in a specific service area is subject to change.
Louisiana Medicare Savings Programs: Discounts are available to residents of Louisiana who need financial assistance with some of their medical costs. Normally to qualify for a Louisiana Medicare Savings Program, your income has to be below a certain limit, but the only way to see if you qualify is by applying.
Louisiana State Health Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (SHIP): The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) provides counseling to seniors on various topics like Medicare claims and the Medicare appeals process. You can speak to a volunteer counselor in person or over the phone, or you can use an online tool.
