By the numbers

Warmer weather and a dryer climate are two things that might draw people to Arizona, a state with over 1.1 million Medicare beneficiaries. Here are a few facts from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services about Medicare enrollment in Arizona in 2018:

  • Total number of beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare in Arizona: 1,279,969
  • Total number of beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage and other health plans) in Arizona: 499,339
  • Arizona beneficiaries with Medicare prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D): 947,586
  • Arizona beneficiaries enrolled in a stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan: 470,958

Medicare Advantage plans and Prescription Drug Plan sponsors must have a contract with Medicare in order to offer Medicare insurance plans (such as a Medicare HMO or a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan). Depending on the terms of the contract between the plan and Medicare, not every plan is available statewide or in all service areas. Each year, the plan must renew their contract with Medicare, so the availability of a plan in a specific service area is subject to change as a result of the annual contract renewal.

Medicare resources in Arizona

Arizona offers no-cost, unbiased resources to help residents who have questions about their Medicare coverage.

Arizona Medicare Savings Programs: If your income is lower than the government set limit, you may be able to receive help with out-of-pocket expenses that Medicare doesn’t cover, including copayments, deductibles, and premiums. You can apply through the Arizona Medicaid department.

Arizona State Health Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (SHIP): In Arizona, Medicare beneficiaries can contact the Division of Aging and Adult Services and be connected with a counselor who can provide information about programs that are best suited for you. Arizona has local SHIP offices located in counties throughout the state.
