If you are a Medicare beneficiary in Nebraska, you may have several options when it comes to how you get your Medicare benefits. One alternative to Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, is a Medicare Advantage plan. Also known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage plans are available through private insurance companies that are contracted by Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans in Nebraska offer at least the same level of coverage of Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, but may also offer additional coverage, such as hearing, routine vision or dental benefits, or prescription drugs.

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’re still enrolled in Medicare and part of the Medicare program; you’ll just be getting your Medicare coverage in a different way. Instead of having your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits administered through the federally administered program, you’ll get them through your Medicare Advantage plan.

There are several different types of Medicare Advantage plans; the specific Medicare plan options available to you will depend on your location and the county you reside in. Some examples of Medicare Advantage plan options that may be offered in your area may include Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans; these are two of the most popular types of managed-care Medicare Advantage plans.

The type of Medicare Advantage plan that works for you will depend on your preferences. HMOs tend to have lower costs, and you’ll need to use network providers to be covered. If you like having greater provider choice, you may prefer a PPO plan, which has preferred provider networks you can use for the lowest costs, but also gives you the option to go out of network (your cost sharing may be higher when using non-network doctors).

Special Needs Plans are another type of Medicare Advantage plan that may be available in your service area. These plans limit enrollment to beneficiaries who live in an institution, have certain chronic illnesses, or get both Medicare and Medicaid. You must meet the eligibility criteria of the Special Needs Plan to enroll, and not every type of Special Needs Plan may be available in every location.

Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans in Nebraska

One key difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans is that you have the option to get prescription drug coverage wrapped into your plan. Medicare Advantage plans in Nebraska that provide prescription drug coverage are known as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans (MAPDs). These plans combine health coverage and prescription drug coverage into a single insurance plan for Medicare beneficiaries.

Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans may vary when it comes to the medications they cover and their costs. To find out if a Medicare Advantage plan covers your prescription drugs, check the plan’s formulary, which is a list of all the medications covered by the plan. Remember, the formulary may change at any time. You will receive notice from your plan when necessary.

How to compare Medicare Advantage plans in Nebraska

When you compare all available Medicare Advantage plan options available to you, it is important to weigh all the plan options for your specific county and zip code. This is because the cost and availability of coverage options will differ from county to county. For example, premiums for a Medicare plan option in one county may be completely different from an identical plan option in another county.

Some Medicare Advantage plans in Nebraska have premiums as low as $0, although this type of plan may not be offered in every location. If your service area offers a Medicare Advantage plan with a $0 premium, keep in mind that you’ll still have other costs, which may include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You’ll need to continue paying your Medicare Part B premium, in addition to any premium required by your Medicare Advantage plan.
