Humana is one of several private insurance companies approved by Medicare to offer Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. If you’re interested in Medicare Part D Plans from Humana, here’s what you need to know about choosing the right coverage for you.

What different Prescription Drug Plans from Humana are available?

Your choice of Prescription Drug Plans from Humana depends on how you get your Medicare coverage. If you enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, you’ll have the option to choose a stand-alone plan that complements your hospital and medical coverage.

If you’re enrolled in a Humana Medicare Advantage Plan, your prescription drug coverage will generally be included in your plan. However, if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan without coverage for prescription drugs, such as a PFFS plan, you may be able to enroll in one of the stand-alone Medicare Part D Plans from Humana that works with your Medicare Advantage plan. Stand-alone Medicare Part D plans generally don’t work with Medicare Advantage plans that are HMOs, PPOs, or SNPs.

Not all Prescription Drug Plans from Humana may be available in every area.

What do Prescription Drug Plans from Humana cover?

Medicare Part D Plans from Humana are required by law to provide a basic level of coverage as specified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). One of the requirements is that all Part D prescription drug coverage, including Prescription Drug Plans from Humana, generally pays for at least two medications in each of the required prescription drug classes. This means that your doctor should be able to find a covered prescription drug to treat most common medical conditions and diseases.

Prescription Drug Plans from Humana use a formulary to spell out their coverage. A formulary is simply a list of prescription drugs covered by the plan. Some Prescription Drug Plans from Humana use a tiered formulary, which means that your copayments are different depending on the tier your medication is on. For example, you may pay a $5 copayment for generic drugs, a $10 copayment for certain brand-name drugs, and $20 for specialty medications. Your plan may also impose quantity limits on your prescriptions, which cap the number of doses you can get at one time.

You may need to fill your prescriptions at a network pharmacy with Prescription Drug Plans from Humana, or pay more out-of-pocket if you don’t use an in-network pharmacy provider. In some cases, you may be able to save on your copayments by using an in-network mail-order pharmacy with preferred cost-sharing.

Some Prescription Drug Plans from Humana may also have an annual deductible before your benefits apply. A deductible is an amount you pay out of pocket.

When should I enroll in Medicare Part D Plans from Humana?

Before you can enroll in Prescription Drug Plans from Humana, you must be enrolled in either Part A and/or Part B or a Medicare Advantage Plan. Your Initial Enrollment Period for Part D is the same as your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare: The three months prior to your 65th birthday, your birthday month, and the three months after your birthday month.

You generally should enroll when you first become eligible unless you have creditable prescription drug coverage from another source, such as an employer or union health plan. If you don’t enroll when you are first eligible, you may be subject to a late enrollment penalty with your premium each month.

If you don’t enroll in a Prescription Drug Plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, you can generally sign up during the Annual Election Period each year between October 15 and December 7. You can also switch from one prescription drug plan to another during this period, or drop your Part D prescription drug coverage altogether.

If you move out of the service area for one of the Prescription Drug Plans from Humana, lose your creditable prescription drug coverage from another source, move into a nursing home, or qualify for extra help, you may also be able to enroll in one of the Prescription Drug Plans from Humana outside the usual enrollment periods.
