Medicare in Florida

By the numbers

Florida is a popular place for many seniors to retire, which also makes it a popular place to receive Medicare benefits. In 2015, there were approximately four million Medicare beneficiaries in Florida, according to a report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Here are more details about Medicare enrollment in Florida:

  • Florida residents enrolled in stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans: 1,401,435

  • Florida residents enrolled in Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans: 1,518,812

  • That makes 2,920,247 Florida residents who have prescription drug coverage, out of the total Medicare population in Florida of 3,968,885.

Private insurance companies must have contracts with Medicare to offer Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. Depending on the terms of the contract between the plan and Medicare, not every plan is available statewide or in all service areas. Each year, the plan must renew its contract with Medicare, so the availability of a plan in a specific service area is subject to change.

Medicare resources in Florida

Many Florida residents take advantage of Medicare resources, which offer free, unbiased information on Medicare plans, benefits, and more.

Medicare Savings Programs: For residents whose income is below a certain predetermined limit, there are various programs to assist with paying for some of the things that Medicare doesn't cover, like your premiums or deductibles. Programs are also available to provide special help for low-income beneficiaries who struggle with prescription costs.

Florida Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders: Most states have a program called SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) that helps beneficiaries and their families better understand Medicare and how it works. In Florida, this program is called SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) and is run by a network of volunteers and funded by a grant from the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services.
