Does Medicare Cover Eye Exams?

While Medicare Part B covers yearly eye exams for people with diabetes, yearly glaucoma tests for people at high risk for glaucoma, and certain diagnostic tests and treatment of eye diseases such as lucentis, aflibercept, and ocular photodynamic therapy, Medicare does not cover routine eyes exams for eyeglasses or contact lenses. The one exception includes the coverage of basic frames and lenses following cataract surgery. Certain Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans may cover vision-related costs or provide additional eye and visions coverage at extra costs.
